由来・語源
帆船でロープの端を巻き付ける係留柱（bitt）に結び付けられた“端（bitter end）”まで繰り出すと、もう余裕がない＝最後まで、という船乗り言葉が比喩化したとされる。加えてbitter（苦い）の連想で「つらい最後まで」の意味が強まった。

困難・不利・苦しい状況でも「最後まで粘る／諦めない」ニュアンス。やや硬めで、闘争・交渉・スポーツなどでよく使う。
文法・使い方の注意点（日本語）
副詞句として「最後まで」に相当し、動詞（fight/hold out/keep goingなど）と一緒に用いるのが一般的。形はほぼ固定で “the” を省かない。
