由来・語源
硬い脂身を長く噛む様子から「時間をかけてだらだら話す」比喩になったとされる。塩漬け肉を噛む船乗りの会話に結び付けて説明されることもある。

くだけた口語。長電話や休憩中の雑談など「用事ではなくおしゃべり」のニュアンス。やや古めだが今も通じる。
文法・使い方の注意点（日本語）
英語では定型表現で、動詞は時制で変化（chewed/chewing）。「with 人」を伴って「人と雑談する」の形が多い。
