由来・語源
20世紀初頭の米国アパート暮らしに由来。上階で靴が1つ落ちる音がすると、もう片方も落ちるはずだと待つ状況が比喩になり、次の（多くは悪い）展開を予期する意味に。

英語では「be waiting for ...」の形が定番で、主語は不安を感じている人/集団。語順はほぼ固定で「the other shoe」が慣用的。
