由来・語源
本来は鞭を鳴らして家畜や人を急がせる行為。そこから「厳しく統制し働かせる」という比喩表現になった。

支配的・強圧的な響きがあり、相手を「鞭で駆り立てる」含意。職場や組織の規律・締め切り場面で口語的に用いるが、乱用すると批判的に聞こえる。

英語では慣用句として語順固定で、the を省かないのが普通。動詞 crack の時制変化のみ可（cracked/cracks）。「crack the whip on + 対象」の形もある。
