由来・語源
「部屋に象がいるほど明白なのに皆が見て見ぬふりをする」という比喩。19世紀の寓話的な表現に由来するとされ、20世紀に現在の言い回しが一般化。

「みんな分かっているのに避けている話題」を指す。会議・人間関係・家庭などでよく使う。やや批判的に“触れるべきだ”という含みを伴うことが多い。
文法・使い方の注意点（日本語）
名詞句として「会議の象」「部屋の中の象」のように使い、「象＝避けられている問題」という比喩。英語では定冠詞theが基本で、省くと不自然。
