由来・語源

「舌を押さえる=話さない」という身体比喩。古くから英語に見られ、「hold one’s peace(黙る)」などと同系の表現。

補足(日本語)

命令形で「黙れ」に近い強い言い方にもなる。丁寧に言うなら“Please be quiet”などが無難。怒りをこらえる文脈でも使う。

文法・使い方の注意点(日本語)

英語では命令形が多いが、主語に応じて my/his/their tongue と所有格が変わる。過去形は held。
