硬貨には表と裏があることから、「同じ物事にも別の側面（対照的な面）がある」という比喩として定着。

名詞句として「（しかし）その反面」「別の側面としては」の形で導入するのが一般的。直訳の「コインの裏側」は比喩としても可。
